How to Create and Use Your First Upsoma Learning Path
What this guide helps you do
Upsoma turns a goal into a learning path that is built around your current skills and keeps adapting as you make progress.
This guide walks through the full beginner flow:
- Open the composer and tell Upsoma what you want to learn.
- Add your career profile so Upsoma can see what you already know (optional).
- Run a skill gap assessment to see your readiness, strengths, and gaps.
- Generate your personalized path.
- Learn through chapters, flashcards, and quizzes - and watch your readiness improve.
You do not need to be technical to use Upsoma. You only need a goal.
The product previews below use one example goal, "Become a junior backend engineer", so the steps are easy to follow from start to finish.
Step 1 - Open the composer
After you sign in, Upsoma takes you to the composer - the box where you tell it what you want to learn.
If you are brand new, click Get started to create your account first (it takes about two minutes), and you will land right here.

Step 2 - Describe your goal
Write your goal in normal language.
Good examples:
- "Become a junior backend engineer."
- "Learn SQL for data analysis."
- "Build reliable React applications."
- "Prepare for software engineering interviews."
Try to describe the outcome you want, not only the topic. Upsoma uses this goal to decide which skills matter and what order to teach them in.
Step 3 - Pick the right match if Upsoma asks
Sometimes a goal can mean more than one thing.
If Upsoma shows a short list of possible matches, choose the one closest to what you want. If your exact goal is not supported yet, Upsoma helps you browse the skills and roles it does cover, so you can pick a good starting point.
Step 4 - Add your career profile, or skip
In the composer you can add your career profile - a resume/CV or a LinkedIn URL.
This step is optional, but it helps a lot: Upsoma uses it to estimate what you already know, so your path can start at the right level instead of the very beginning.
You can:
- Upload a resume/CV.
- Paste a LinkedIn profile URL.
- Skip it and start from your goal alone.
Before Upsoma reads a resume or profile, it asks for your consent - nothing is processed without your say-so.

Step 5 - Answer a couple of quick questions if asked
If Upsoma needs a little more signal about your background, it may ask a few short questions about skills related to your goal.
There is no need to overthink these. Your answers only help Upsoma choose a better starting point.

Step 6 - Choose Skill Gap Assessment or Personalized Learning
The composer gives you two ways to begin, and you can switch between them with the toggle:
- Skill Gap Assessment - see where you stand before committing to a path. Upsoma shows your readiness for the goal, your confirmed strengths, and your highest-priority gaps.
- Personalized Learning - go straight to building a learning path for your goal.
If you are not sure, start with Skill Gap Assessment. It is the clearest picture of what you already know and what to work on next.
Step 7 - Review your readiness
The skill gap assessment shows your readiness - Upsoma's best estimate of where you are today for the skills behind your goal, compared against the target level.
You will see:
- An overall readiness score against your goal.
- Confirmed strengths - skills you have already shown.
- Highest-priority gaps - the skills that matter most and need the most work.
Upsoma also keeps a short history of your recent assessments, so you can come back and compare.
Your path starts from the skill gap assessment and adapts as you learn.
Step 8 - Generate your path
When you are ready, choose Generate path.
Upsoma builds a personalized path for your goal, sequenced from the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. Your strongest skills are assumed, and the path focuses on what you actually need.
After the path is created, Upsoma opens the path view so you can see the journey ahead.
Step 9 - Understand your learning path
The path view shows how your learning is organized.
You will see:
- Your goal at the top.
- Chapters mapped to that goal.
- Which chapters are ready to start now.
- Which later chapters unlock after you finish the ones before them.
Use this view when you want to understand the full shape of your path before you dive in.

Step 10 - Start learning
Choose Continue, or open the first available chapter.
Each chapter can include different learning formats:
- A lesson that explains the topic clearly, with diagrams and inline questions you can tap to go deeper.
- Flashcards for recall and practice - these appear right inside the chapter.
- A quiz to check your understanding.
- References or short videos when they help.
A friendly tutor sits alongside each chapter too, so you can ask a question about anything you are reading.
If a chapter is still being prepared, Upsoma shows a loading state and checks again automatically.
Step 11 - Finish the checks
For lesson chapters, Upsoma asks you to complete a couple of checks before moving on.
These checks matter because Upsoma does not treat progress as a simple click - it uses what you actually do to update your readiness.
Work through the flashcards and quiz, then choose to finish the chapter and continue.
Use a route, request body, response shape, and status code that match the job to be done.
- Choose the endpoint purpose.
- Define the request and response.
- Connect the endpoint to a check.

After each completed chapter, Upsoma moves you to the next step.
As you learn, it keeps track of:
- Chapters completed.
- Quiz results.
- Flashcard performance.
- Skills that are improving.
- Gaps that still need work.
This is what makes the path adaptive. Your activity becomes new signal, and that signal helps Upsoma keep the path relevant to you.
Step 13 - Return to your paths anytime
Your My Paths hub shows your active and completed pathways.
Use it to:
- Continue your most recent path.
- Open another active path.
- Review completed paths.
- Start a new one.
- Filter by area when you have several.
If you do not have any paths yet, Upsoma sends you back to the composer so you can create your first one.

Optional - Start from a community pathway
You can also start from a path created by another learner.
The community pathways section shows real paths built by other learners. Choose one that looks close to your goal and use it as a starting point.
Upsoma still personalizes it for you. A community pathway gives you a useful direction, but your own goal, career profile, and readiness shape the final plan.
